Baking Dish Loaf Pan Fire King Oven Proof Anchor Hocking Ribbed White Milk Glass 1 Quart 1409 Mid Century Modern MCM Vintage Bakeware

This 1409 Fire King Oven Proof Loaf Pan by Anchor Hocking was produced in the USA in the 1950s. The ribbed textured milk glass gives this vintage piece an elegant yet sophisticated mid-century look. The capacity is 1 quart and is the ideal vessel for your signature lemon loaf, chocolate chip banana bread, cinnamon swirl coffee cake, you name it!

Condition: Excellent vintage condition, some evidence of light use. There is a small mark from manufacturing on one side of the rim, please see photographs #6 and 7 for scale; it is not a chip but a slight imperfection in the glass which is purely cosmetic. Please refer to the pictures as they are a part of the description. If you have any concerns about the condition or you require more detail I can provide additional photographs on request.

Some interesting background info and history of Anchor Hocking's Fire King:

“Fire-King Oven Glass” was produced as a result of World War II, while rivaling Pyrex baking dishes. (Alexander 39). Metal that was traditionally used for household items like baking dishes, trays, and utensils was conserved for war efforts. It was desperately needed most for planes, tanks, guns and ships. (Anchor Hocking 29)

Anchor Hocking’s answer was Fire-King. Glass bakeware designed to withstand high heat on the stovetop and in the oven, which essentially replaced the need for metal pots and pans. (“Anchor Hocking’s 100-Foot Fair Tent To Hold Glass Plants of 1943, Century Ago” 20) Fire-King dishes were designed to prep ingredients, cook food in, serve from at the table, and store leftovers in – all using the same dish.

Over 3,000 Anchor Hocking employees joined the army and fought in World War II. Sixty-three of them were killed in action. After the war 80% of those veterans returned to work for Anchor Hocking. (Alexander 24)

Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

Most vintage and antique glassware should be hand washed only and not in the dishwasher; especially any pieces with graphics or colourful patterns, for example Pyrex, Fire King, Glasbake, Corelle, drinkware, etc. Dishwashers can dull the finish on these unique pieces and cause premature wear to the surface and patterns or cause what is known as DWD or Dishwasher Damage which is irreversible. It's always better to be safe and wash by hand if you can.

Add some dish washing liquid into a sink or basin and add warm water. Placing a towel underneath can help to avoid breakage. It is best to use a damp cloth for any pieces with hand-painted decorations to preserve the art as even regular hand-washing can degrade these over time.
