Blue Mountain Pottery Deviled Egg Platter Tray Relish Serving Plate BMP Collingwood Ontario Canada Mid Century Modern MCM Vintage Serveware

This Egg Plate with a colourfully minimalist mid century modern design was made by Blue Mountain Pottery in the Town of The Blue Mountains (Collingwood, Ontario, Canada.) The beautiful drip glaze platter, glazed in their trademark teal and black over terra-cotta pottery; has 12 recesses for eggs and a central round recess for a salt shaker (not included but there is a chicken salt shaker that matches this set.) Blue Mountain Pottery items feature a unique, trademarked glazing process known as "reflowing decorating." Two different liquid glazes, one light and one dark in colour, were applied. During the firing process the glazes would run, creating streaking patterns unique to each piece. Measurements: 11 1/4” in diameter and approximately 1 1/4” in height.

"Blue Mountain Pottery is one of Canada's, and Ontario's, best known ceramic producers. The studio was started by Jozo Weider, an immigrant from what was once Czechoslovakia, and is named after its location, at the foot of the Blue Mountains in Collingwood in the early 1950s. It was in operation until 2005. The pottery was well loved throughout Canada, and exported to the US, Britain, Australia and New Zealand, among other international markets. The beginnings were humble; Jozo was a ski instructor who moved to Blue Mountain to work in the ski industry, but wanted to expand the existing resort's income streams to include a gift store. He, along with Denis Tupy (also from Czechoslovakia), began experimenting with locally available clays in the Georgian Bay area, and eventually developed a workable recipe. A third Czech immigrant, Mirek Hambalek, trained as a ceramic glazer, began working with Weider and Tupy, forming the backbone of Blue Mountain."

Condition: This deviled egg plate is in excellent preloved, vintage condition. On the underside edge of the plate where it sits on the table there is some extremely light evidence of wear. No cracks, chips or crazing, this piece was built to last. The plate is unmarked, the BMP sticker is gone however the sticker remnants are still on the back of the plate.
