Uranium Green Depression Glass Drink Pitcher Vintage Art Deco Ribbed Wavy Swirl Pattern Glows Under UV Light Water Juice Serveware Tableware

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a large heavy glass Uranium Green Depression Era Drink / Water / Juice Pitcher, manufactured sometime before 1940. The scarcity of uranium between 1942 and 1958 meant that production paused in many areas and was stopped completely in the US as the government confiscated uranium supplies for the war effort. Featuring a Ribbed Wave Swirl pattern, a beautifully curvaceous handle and an ice-lip spout, this heavy glass pitcher glows a bright, vibrant chartreuse or lime green under UV light! In fact the green is so bright it glows even under normal lighting conditions.

Measuring 8 inches tall, 7 1/2" from spout to handle. 4 3/4" in diameter at the base.

Is Uranium Glass Safe?
"The fact that the glass contains uranium has led many people to wonder if uranium glass is dangerous. However, as the amounts of uranium used in each piece are typically very low (typically less than 2% of the glass composition by weight), it is safe to have in your home so long as it is used and handled correctly. Uranium glass is considered to be radioactive, but the level of radioactivity is very low. This generally means that there are no negative health impacts when you handle the glass correctly. In fact, a report published by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2001 stated that uranium glass is considered to be safer than household electronics. Despite this, it is recommended that you avoid eating or drinking out of uranium glass objects, as you can end up ingesting small fragments of radioactive material."

Condition: This heavy glass pitcher is in preloved vintage condition with evidence of shelf wear, scuffing on the bottom; there are some chips on the bottom edge, the larger one is clearly illustrated in the photos. There is a scratch on the outside of the pitcher, between 1.5-2 inches up from the bottom which you can feel on the outside but it does not go completely through the glass like a crack (also pictured in more detail). Some imperfections which are characteristic of the age of this piece (bubbles and straw marks in the glass.) Please refer to the pictures as they are a part of the description. If you have any concerns about the condition or you require more detail I can provide additional photographs on request.
