Fire King Ovenware Round Covered Casserole 1 Quart Philbe Pattern in Sapphire Blue by Anchor Hocking Blue Depression Era Oven Proof Glass

Fire King Philbe Sapphire Blue Ovenware 1 Quart Round Casserole Dish with Knob Lid by Anchor Hocking. This Fire King Oven Ware set was crafted in the United States and combines the solid, heavy glass construction that Anchor Hocking is known for; with the delicate beauty of depression era styling in their Philbe pattern (based on the Hocking Philbe dinnerware with some distinct differences to the Philbe pattern) and that oh-so-lovely, transparent Sapphire Blue colour of glass!

The Fire King brand of ovenware from Anchor Hocking is similar to Pyrex dinnerware and kitchenware and was made from low expansion borosilicate glass, ideal for oven use. Their multi-functional covered casserole dishes could be used to bake and serve, and then store the leftovers in the refrigerator. Fire King glass was never meant to be used on top of the stove, although Fire King glass is made of oven-proof glass; there were no microwaves in existence when it was first manufactured and it is not recommended for microwave use. Fire-King was also not designed for dishwasher use, which can dull its original lustre and remove any applied paint decorations. This dish measures 7 1/4 inches in width, 4 1/2 inches in height with a capacity of 1 quart.

Condition: This depression era ovenware casserole dish and lid are in good preloved vintage condition with some evidence of use and minor imperfections which are characteristic of the age of this piece (some utensil marks/scrapes on the bottom inside of the dish, very rough in one spot in particular.) There is a blemish from manufacturing inside the glass, pictured in photos #6 and 7. Both the lid and dish are marked with the makers mark 'FIRE KING' in block letters. Please refer to the pictures as they are a part of the description. If you have any concerns about the condition or you require more detail I can provide additional photographs on request.

More info on Anchor Hocking:
"Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation began as the Hocking Glass Company of Lancaster, Ohio. The company was founded in 1905 near the Hocking River, for which it’s named; the pressed-glass company prospered until 1937, when it merged with the Anchor Cap and Closure Corporation of Long Island City, New York. The company is best known for its Fire-King glass, manufactured from about 1940 until 1976. Fire King quickly gained popularity due to its durability, versatility, and attractive designs. Fire-King products are known for their resistance to thermal shock, meaning they can go directly from the freezer or refrigerator to the oven without shattering. This quality made them a favorite choice for cooking, baking, and serving meals. The brand was also used on various patterns and colours of dinnerware, mixing bowls, and coffee mugs.
Anchor Hocking also made Fire-King for restaurants and institutions, such as schools and the U.S. military, from 1948 until 1967. Fire King Restaurant Ware was manufactured in various functional pieces, including plates, bowls, mugs, cups, saucers, serving platters, and more. The designs were often simple and practical, with minimal decorative elements, focusing on functionality and durability instead. These pieces were stackable, easy to clean, and withstand temperature fluctuations, making them ideal for commercial kitchens and busy dining establishments. "

Frequently Asked Questions

Care instructions

Most vintage and antique glassware should be hand washed only and not in the dishwasher; especially any pieces with graphics or colourful patterns, for example Pyrex, Fire King, Glasbake, Corelle, drinkware, etc. Dishwashers can dull the finish on these unique pieces and cause premature wear to the surface and patterns or cause what is known as DWD or Dishwasher Damage which is irreversible. It's always better to be safe and wash by hand if you can.

Add some dish washing liquid into a sink or basin and add warm water. Placing a towel underneath can help to avoid breakage. It is best to use a damp cloth for any pieces with hand-painted decorations to preserve the art as even regular hand-washing can degrade these over time.
