A sunny vintage Federal Glass USA milk glass 7" mixing bowl, circa 1950's/1960s in the extremely rare Fruit Salad pattern with a yellow decoration on white milk glass. This is the 2nd largest bowl in a set of 4 produced - a full set comprises red 8", yellow 7", orange 6" and brown 5". The base of the bowl is marked with Federal Glass logo of F inside shield makers mark and "Oven Ware."
Condition: This collectible and rare patterned bowl from Federal glass is in preloved vintage condition with evidence of heavy use; however, I believe it has value for someone looking to complete a set as this pattern is extremely rare. The yellow decal on the outside of the bowl is mostly intact and shiny, only a few spots where its worn but the glossy finish on the inside of the bowl has seen better days. The gloss coat on the white milkglass is worn on the inside on half of the bowl and you can see the split in the photos as well as some utensil marks in the bottom. There are some flea bites around the top rim of the bowl and fine scratches in the milkglass on the outside of the bowl. These flaws are purely cosmetic and there is still plenty of life left in this funky vintage mixing bowl. The pattern immediately caught my eye as it has the aesthetic of a simpler, more carefree and fun time of the mid century era! If you collect Federal Glass and wish to complete your Fruit Salad Pattern set this is a must have. A beautiful bowl for your vintage kitchen/milk glass collection or to serve one of your Grandma's famous Jello salads at your next family gathering.

Some fun facts on Jello:
"The Democratization of Gelatin
These days, some people would never think of using gelatin outside of making Jell-O shots. But gelatin used to be a household staple. Back in the Victorian age, long before Jell-O became “America’s Most Famous Dessert,” it was considered an ingredient for the elite.
“Before the invention of gelatin convenience products like Knox and Jell-O, these dishes were so labor-intensive that serving them pretty much proved you had a large kitchen of servants,” said Carolyn Wyman, author of Jell-O: A Biography - The History and Mystery of America’s Most Famous Dessert. “Jell-O democratized gelatin and made this previously high-end-only dessert available to the masses.”
Advertisements in the 1920s painted Jell-O as a luxury product that was attainable for working-class people. According to Wyman, this marketing played into Americans' desire to move up in class. But it wasn’t until after World War II that Jell-O salads had their moment.
“Jell-O salads first became popular in the 1930s but reached their highest expression as part of the processed food school of cooking that sprang up after the war,” said Wyman. This was an era of packaged foods and TV dinners, and it was the golden age of gelatin desserts. “As one of America's first convenience products, Jell-O blended right in with this trend and literally blended into the salads with other convenience foods like Minute Rice and Cool Whip.”

Most vintage and antique glassware should be hand washed only and not in the dishwasher; especially any pieces with graphics or colourful patterns, for example Pyrex, Fire King, Glasbake, Corelle, drinkware, etc. Dishwashers can dull the finish on these unique pieces and cause premature wear to the surface and patterns or cause what is known as DWD or Dishwasher Damage which is irreversible. It's always better to be safe and wash by hand if you can.
Add some dish washing liquid into a sink or basin and add warm water. Placing a towel underneath can help to avoid breakage. It is best to use a damp cloth for any pieces with hand-painted decorations to preserve the art as even regular hand-washing can degrade these over time.
Absolutely!
